Introduced a year and a half after the 75000 series Class 4 4-6-0 locomotives, the 76000 series Class 4 2-6-0s were designed at Doncaster and built there and at Horwich. Despite being longer than the 4-6-0 locomotives, the 2-6-0s were lighter and with a low axle loading of less than 17 tons they had a wide route availability, which made them particularly useful for work on the Southern Region, which had the largest allocation of them.

The first loco withdrawn was 76028 on 31 May 1964 from Eastleigh shed.
The last four locos withdrawn were 76077, 76079, 76080 and 76084 on 31 December 1967 from Wigan Springs Branch shed.

Four locos are preserved - 76017, 76077, 76079 and 76084.
