The earlier GNR built engines had slightly more rounded cabs and otherwise differ slightly in minor detail.

This Gresley Class was introduced in 1922 and was good enough for development by the LNER as one of their standard designs.
In 1922 ten J50s were built with a further sixty-two being built between 1924-1939. During this time a further thirty J51s built from 1913-19 (also GNR Class J23) were rebuilt to Class J50.
The class was widely scattered over the LNER, with a small group operating in Scotland.
