Introduced 1926. Gresley London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) large 5'2" wheeled development of Class J38.
The Class J39 was the most numerous of the Gresley designs with 289 being constructed and was divided into three parts based upon the type of tender that was attached, with parts 1 and 2 applying to the LNER 3,500 and 4,200 gallon tenders respectively.
Part 3 was reserved for those with miscellaneous tenders from the North Eastern and Great Central Railways. 3,900 gallon on 64842-45; 4,125 gallon on 64855-59; plus various others.
Number Series 64842-64988 (with gaps - see Locomotive Numbers below).
Built at London & North Eastern Railway Doncaster Works.
No Lot Nos. yet available.
The first loco withdrawn was 64983 on 10 November 1959 from Colwick shed.
The last six locos withdrawn were 64975 and 64986 on 29 December 1962 from Dawsholme and Thornton Junction sheds respectively.
None are preserved.
