Message: Have tried to register TWICE now. Each time I've been told an e-mail message has been sent, in order to complete the process, ... but no e-mail has been received (I've also checked the junk folder). Any suggestion, please?

Reply: Hi David,

I'm not sure what has happened here. In the last week we have had 20 registrations all which have worked ok.

Anyway, I have manually set the verification so you should be able to log in now with the second user name.

Message: I have created a login to use PC TOPS, is it still under development at this stage? As I have a had some problems with, unlike what it says in the "what's new section" with providing real-time update information etc.

When I clicked on the link to try out PC TOPS, it referred me to the registration page, which I filled in again, hence created to logins, is it possible to delete one or both of my accounts? It won't also log me out either.

Sorry in advance for all these problems (I am a software developer/tester)

I look forward to hearing from you

Best wishes
Gary

Message: Recently, I have been asked to write an illustrated article for the Great Western Society's journal on viaducts on the Taff Vale Extension of the Newport. Abergavenny & Hereford Railway, for which I will receive no payment.
Having decided to supplement my own photograph resources I found that your website contained some interesting and relevant images.
As a result I write to ask:
1) if you can supply images of relatively high resolution (minimum 300ppi)?
2) what might the cost be?
3) would you charge a reproduction fee - bearing in mind that the GWS is a registered charity?
Many thanks in anticipation,
your sincerely,
Terry McCarthy

Reply: Hi Terry,

It depends on which photos you require. Most of the early photos on the site were taken from the old internet 'user groups' which are now defunct and these are the only resolution I have.

If you advise which photos you want I will check them out.

Message: Hi

I work in the Bluebell Railway Museum and we have recently been given a Dubs worksplate number 3536. We believe it's from SR class 700 30352. However your website shows that engine with Dubs number 5536. You don't have 3536 in your database.

Can you throw any light on this.

Thanks

Tony

Reply: Hi Tony,

Sorry for delay in replying. I have been trying to trace my original records (without success).

Anyway, looking at the work number range for the 700 class it seems somehow that I have entered the 35xx range of work numbers as 55xx. I have now amended this range to read 35xx and works number 3536 now shows correctly for loco 30352

Message: During the late 1960's I visited J.Buttigiegs scrapyard in Newport. I was a regular visitor and took photos in B & W Gaevart Slides. I have a photo of 34017 Ilfracome and 35030 Elder Demster without tenders standing footplate to footplate awaiting cutting up. I have read your list under the name of "Locomotive Scrapyard" Code BUN and 35030 is not mentioned. It should be listed. My photo proves it.

Reply: Hi Graham,

Only the basic data for merchant Navy locos are shown on the site, I have not entered the main details eg build, withdraw, etc data yet.

However, I have updated the details for 35030.

Name: Roger Bateman, City: Stafford, Country: United Kingdom

Message: Dear Sir,
Could you please help me to establish if GWR Hall Class 4969 Shrugborough Hall is named after the Staffordshire Shugborough Hall. You will notice the spelling of both names. If it wasn't named after the Staffordshire Hall, where is the Shrugborough Hall with this spelling.

Regards

Roger Bateman

Reply: Hi Roger,

According to my Ian Alan BR Locomotives Combined Volumes Summer 1958, Winter 1958/59 & The Observers Book of Railway Locomotives of Britain 1958 it is named Shrugborough Hall.

The Great Western archive and Wikipedia on the net also lists it with the "R".

There is a photo on ebay which also shows the name as Shrugborough Hall.

http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Hall-4969-Steam-Railway-Negative-with-Copyright-Reading-1950s-/381631081301

Having said that, like you say, if you search "Shrugborough Hall" you come up with "Shugborough Hall" in Staffs.

So did the GWR get it wrong as there disn't seem to be a Shrugborough Hall anywhere??
