LMS/BR Class Black Five 4-6-0 No. 44751 fitted with Caprotti valve gear and roller-bearings, approaches Manchester Victoria station 3rd September 1960. A view eastward from the east end of the long through platform Nos. 11/3, showing the ex-L&Y main lines up the bank towards Miles Platting and Yorkshire. On the left is Victoria East Box, which controlled the junction with the Manchester Loop to Cheetham Hill Junction and Thorpes Bridge Junction.

The approach is admired by a bevvy of trainspotters all wearing jackets on this wet day and either long or short trousers.

IAN WILLIAMS said on the 14/11/2017:
This could have been me on any saturday in that era. Just vivble on the extreme right hand edge is an original L and Y design "spare" electric set for the Bury line. Always stabled there between the morning and evening peaks. The doors on these sets were set at an angle with a roomy space on the outside. Many times saw a commuter travelling on the outside having just jumped on after the guards whistle
