LMS/BR Stanier Coronation Class 4-6-2 No. 46227 at Carlisle Station c.1953 - Low Resolution Image

London Midland Scottish Railway/British Railways Stanier designed 'Coronation' Class 7P Pacific No. 46227 'Duchess of Devonshire', with the streamlining long since removed, stands in Platform 7 at Carlisle station circa 1953. Initially, de-streamlined locomotives could readily be recognised by the sloping top to the front of the smokebox, as seen in this photo. All were eventually re-equipped with fully round smokeboxes; This loco received a round smokebox in May 1953. The sloping top led to the train-spotters' nickname of Semis (i.e. semi-streamlined). It was withdrawn from 66A Polmadie shed, Glasgow in December 1962 and cut up at Crewe works in November 1963.

Two quintessential fifties schoolboy trainspotters in their school uniforms of peaked school cap, shirt, tie, pullover, blazer, short trousers and knee socks, pose for a photo in front of the loco, carefully watched by the driver and fireman.
