Built at BREL Crewe in April 1974, 87023 'Highland Chieftain' saw 38 years service on WCML, before withdrawal and export to Bulgaria.

Recently outshopped from overhaul at Crewe, 87023 had failed earlier in the week on a down IC service. Here it is, after attention at Polmadie, running in behind 81019 while doing an out and back circuit of the Glasgow suburban line; the Hamilton Circle.

Named at Willesden depot without ceremony on 03/07/1978 for James Graham (1612-1650)the Marquis of Montrose, a Highland Chieftain - to mark the Anglo-Scottish links of these WCML locos. The name was transferred the following year to an HST power car 43092 to mark the inauguration of the Inverness - Kings Cross HST service of the same name.
