Built October 1968 at EE Vulcan Foundry; here 50045 "Achilles" heads through an up Parcels train. Withdrawn in December 1990 this loco was scrapped at Booth Roe Metals, Rotherham - though the bodyshell was displayed at the Barrow Roundhouse.

Named on 12 April 1978 at Laira MPD, it was named after the New Zealand light cruiser Achilles, which saw action at the Battle of the River Plate.
