Built in November 1960 by Brush Traction, Loughborough and like all of its class, initially allocated to the Eastern Region; here 31237 sets back the ecs for its later working, 1E33 15.37 Carlisle - Leeds, via S&C line. Throughout their BR careers, these locos were largely found on Eastern and Western Region metals. This loco still retains its cabside bottom skirt behind the buffers, removed in later refurbishments to reduce corrosion. Withdrawn in 2000, it was scrapped in 2004 by TJ Thompson, Stockton.
